State prosecutors leading the fraud case against Neymar and Barcelona in the Spanish High Court have asked for the player to be handed a two-year prison sentence for his part in proceedings surrounding his transfer from boyhood club Santos in 2013.

Prosecutors have also requested that former Barça president Sandro Rosell serve five years behind bars, while asking that the Catalan club pays a fine of €8.4m.

Everything stems from a complaint initially filed by DIS, a Brazilian investment company that formerly owned 40% of Neymar’s rights and claims to have been defrauded by the defendants.

DIS had requested that Neymar, Rosell and current Barcelona president Josip Maria Bartomeu are all handed five-year prison sentences, as well as a €195m fine for the club.

The transfer of Neymar to Barcelona was first investigated in January 2014 after apparent discrepancies and contradiction over the fee recorded in official documentation. Rosell resigned his post as president almost immediately and the first charges were brought in September 2014.

The case was initially dismissed over a lack evidence in July 2016 but was reopened just two months later in September on the orders of the High Court in Spain.
