Unless you’re loaded and fly business or first class, space is hard to find on airplanes.
This tip might help you: a ‘secret’ button under the armrests.
Obviously, armrests are welcome. We can lean on them, or perhaps prop up a pillow and get a bit of sleep.
But armrests are also quite confining – particularly on smaller, budget flights around Europe. It’s unlikely you’ll get any sleep on a morning trip out to southern Spain, so you may as well maximise drinking beer room.
According to Insider , the a ‘secret button’ is underneath the armrest, next to the hinge.
Sliding your hand under the frame and pressing the button should allow you to ease the armrest up. It gives your body more space, and a little more legroom too.
The trick is also handy when you’re alighting the aircraft and need to get your bags from the overhead compartments. No more squeezing your legs in between seats and backs.
Unfortunately, we don’t know for sure whether the button is on all airlines. Ryanair? We’d be a little surprised. But the button is definitely worth checking for.
Most planes should have it, as the setting wasn’t designed for room, but for easier movement in the case of an emergency. Which does propose the question: why aren’t more passengers privy to the information?
Anyway, we hope you make use of this magical button – and get a little more spacial relief the next time you travel.
